SGB@SP - Christmas Bash

On the night of 22nd December, we were all treated to a Christmas party at Vanda Room. Many people seem to have trouble finding the place as people were searching everywhere for just one room while I was watching from inside. However I was lost initially as well, since I came in from the gate near the Graduates Guild.

There was a warm reception and a Christmas-friendly environment when we were finally at the entrance of the room. We were given a popper and a tattoo to allocate us into the different groups later on during the games.

As I was turning away from the reception desk, I saw some people by a pail of water trying to wet the tattoo so that it could stick onto our skin. The program started off late and some people were busy taking photos, some having meetings, some setting things up, some chatting away and fews were staring into space.

Finally the program started with two emcees to come up and gave an overview of the program before passing the microphone to the chairperson of SP Primers. The emcees did a really great job at giving us an overview and seems like there is going to be a lot of fun-filled activities lined-up for everyone.

The microphone was then giving to the chairperson of SP Primers who shared with us the story of a canned food to highlight the progress of SGB and the statistics as well as the achievements we had doing this remarkable event. Although the story was a bit way too long but nobody was bored and some even laughed and cheer while he was telling the story. That shows the support that we have for one another in this CCA, as a family.

Then we all had to be put into groups to play certain games and there was even Santa Claus who ripped the star off the Christmas tree together with our officer Mr. Kenny.

There was also a Christmas tree decoration contest but we are not dolling up the trees but the youngest member of our group and Xiuli won the contest being a ballerina Christmas tree.

Finally the program ended with a marshmallow stuffing contest to see who can stuff the most marshmallow into their mouth and say a Christmas phrase for the audience to guess. Paul is the winner with a record-setting 9 marshmallow in his mouth!!!!

We also have other participators with their might to get as many marshmallow into their mouth.

Then we come to the end of the program and the most anticipated part of the event. THE BUFFET!!!! Well there was just too many people and too little food to go around, which give no doubt why many people were whining and some didn’t even get to sink their teeth into the food.

Honestly, the audience played a huge part to make the program a success, although the original program was greatly cut short but it was the audience that made it a success.

SGB@SP - Distribution

After all the sorting out of the items we collected during SGB Collection from all the neighbourhood area, we finally reach the day of SGB Distribution.
How time past, as all the hard work for the past month will finally be materialized on this day, the day of Distribution. With everyone arriving with a heart of anticipation, the atmosphere around the convention centre was set to be buzzing. To cut thing short, after all the administration and briefing was done, all of us were ready to travel out of SP and spread the joy of giving!

The manpower was divided into three areas, namely Clementi, Indus road and Bedok. From the aura emitted out of everyone around me, I could sense a level of commitment they put into their job as they embark on this journey. Surely there were trouble here and there, as the recipient might not be at home or the gift pack was deliver late due to some delay at HQ. However all these do not matter once we saw the smile on their faces as it melt away all the frustration of waiting.
Valuable lesson and insight had been passed to us through this experience. A new sense of self awareness of one surrounding and society had been created. This will surely be a lifelong moment to treasure for those few enduring memories so close to our heart.

Capt Danny on SGB

Hi Guys,

I'm so glad to hear that it has been a wonderful journey for many of you as you serve for SGB. Lixuan, its always so encouraging to hear your share. You always find precious moments of thanksgiving to share in everythin you do. Keep going, one day you may become the next Auntie Lixuan Theresa of Singapore....:)

Just to share, I once read a story of a lady together with her 2 fellow sisters who took shelter the poor and unfortunate from the streets. One night, they found 3 homeless ladies and took them in. The leader of the group told the other 2, you take care of the other 2 ladies, let me take care of this woman (The lady in the worst condition). They wash and cleaned them. Changed them into new clothing and tug them into a nice bed and warm blankets. The lady she took care of died the next day.

But she would never forget that two words this dying woman said to her that nite. Looking at her eye to eye, she mouthed these words, "Thank you". How precious were these words from a woman who had nothing to offer, yet we know the words anyone offers in their deathbed would be the most precious. These two words burned into a movement that has since shook the world through this fine lady of the Millenium, Mother Theresa.

I hope that we will remember that in this Christmas season, coincidentally also the Season of Giving. That even through the tiring and tough times of this SGB as we all practice the spirit of giving will ultimately also receive the Spirit of Love just as Sister Theresa did that one nite. May we learn to treasure those around us, both the less fortunate as well as the friends around us.

THANK YOU !

Lots of Love,
Danny

SGB@SP - Neighbourhood Collection #2

Last Saturday was the Neighbourhood Collection for the Primers and non-primers. I must really thank those non-primers who came down today to help up in the collection. GREAT EFFORT to EVERYONE!

Okay well, met up with my class gals cum friends and cum granddaughters at Dover station. Haha. Thank a lot for sacrificing your Saturday for your ahma here. Really felt very touch! So after that, went to MLT 9 for our briefing for the collection. Whoo. That’s a lot of people, glad to know that quite a number of non-primers are joining us too. Hehe. (Thank to the publicity team because I am inside the team too. Haha!)

After Huishan’s briefing of what’s SGB Collection, waited for around half an hour or maybe more than that. But, meanwhile we had Jacob to entertain the rest of us by playing spot the differences game. When the grouping was out, we finally know our grouping; guess what, we were in Vimel group. (a blessing or a disaster? Haha. Just kidding) Vimel is a great IC, take good care of us (: Finally, we boarded the bus and reached Yew Tee to our area for collection. I think it was a great experience for everyone in the group including me too.

Door-to-door collection is something that I did not come across. You get to know how it is when you went approaching those residents. Some can be nasty and some can be very friendly. For me, I think most of them are kind people. Some of them were not at home but they make an effort to put their food items outside the door.
To my surprise, there was even one resident waiting for me at the door. Wahh. This is awesome! How I wish everyone can be like them. Of course there was one irritating one who let his cats out just to scare us away. (NOTICE: BIG FAT flurry cat)

Lastly, the overall collection was FUN and great EXPERIENCE for everyone in the group. Although it was tiring but I am sure we are enjoying the whole event and I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to my girls. Jasmine, Paula, Yick Moey, Ee Lin, Jun Ling, Poh Ling, Shi Yun and Ke Xuan and not forgetting the only MAN in the group Vimel Rajoo! (:

Liling,
(Vimel's group)

SGB@SP - Neighbourhood Collection

It was Neighbourhood Collection (part of Sharity Gift Box @ SP) last Saturday! I was involved in helping to go door-to-door and collect food items from residents living in Yew Tee.

Upon reaching Yew Tee, we had a short briefing on what needs to be done later on. Soon after, everyone wasted no time in starting with the collection. Because it was the first time for many of us to do a door-to-door collection of items, it was somewhat awkward to approach residents at their doorsteps and ask them politely whether they have any items to donate. After awhile, things got much easier as we got used to all the knocking on doors of the residents.

Initially, there was not many items we could collect from the residents, which were quite disappointing. However, as we proceeded on to the next few blocks, the amount of items we collected were overwhelming! Residents after residents got more and more generous, much to our delights. During the collecting of food items, we somehow caught a glimpse of the many different sides of Singaporeans. Some were extremely kind, where they had already prepared the items way beforehand as soon as they found out about this collection. People who did not know of our collection just gathered what they could offer on the spot, and an aunty even offered us a plastic bag so we could hold all our items inside to make things easier for us!

Every good comes with bad, and of course, we met with crude residents as well! Someone slammed a door at one of us and some refused to open the door. Others took an extremely long time to just get themselves to speak to us because they were lazy to get to their doors.

Through all these encounters with people, it is quite evident that besides those realistic people who only cared about their own welfare, there were still kind souls who would try to do their part to help the poor people in their country!
It is actually quite heart-warming for us to know that and the whole collection event had certainly made most of our day.

I guess many of us had joined SGB @ SP for CCA points or to fulfil our CIP hours. However, at the end of this event, many of us would have changed our points of view. Even if there were no CIP hours to fill, no CCA points to earn, I believe most of us would still get ourselves involved in this meaningful event!

SGB@SP - Neighbourhood Publicity

Neighborhood Publicity is one of the key events as part of Sharity Gift Box @ SP. We went to Yee Tee area to promote our next event, Neighbourhood Collection. Well, although it is tiring to wake up early in weekend morning. But, having to help the needy, I feel that is all worthwhile.

After our briefing in SP, we proceed to board the bus and travel to Yee Tee. We get to know more about Collection from the Group Leaders (GL) on the bus. Having good interaction with them, does establish good connections.

After we reached Yee Tee, we have a briefing among our group. Our group, the “Chi-na” has done an interesting introduction using only Chinese. Although our proficiency in the language is quite limited, we have great fun. Time to start publicizing, we organized our group properly and we have done publicizing Collection fast. Well, good teamwork indeed made work easier.

After lunch, we went back for more actions.
With experience received in the morning, we are able to handle the publicizing with more confidence.
Times flies when you are enjoying it, it’s time to pack and we have our round of sharing on a playground. We have some time of fun there before drizzle came to spoil the fun. However, we did have our fun and I can’t wait for the next event to come up!

What Kind of **** Family Are We?

Guys i am starting a mini series of 4 weeks of sharing and specially i will deal with the issue of what kind of family SP.Primers really are. So i hope you enjoy what i am about to bring you and get more guys to come here and read k. Thanks.

This is an excerpt from one of my favourite author Max Lucado.
"Five year old Madeline climbed into her father's lap.
"Did you have enough to eat?" he asked her.
She smiled and patted her tummy. "I can't eat any more."
"Did you have some of your grandma's pie?"
"a whole piece!"
joe looked across the table at his mom."looks like you filled us up. Don't think we'll be able to do anything tonight but go to bed."
Madeline put her litle hands on either side of his big face."oh, but. Poppa, this is christmas eve. you said we could dance."
Joe feigned a poor memory."did i now? Why, i don't remember saying anything about dancing."
Grandma smiled and shooked her head as she began clearing the table.
"but poppa," madeline pleaded," we always dance on christmas eve. just you and me, remember?"
A smile burst from beneath his thick mustache."of course i remember, darling. How could i forget?"
and with that he stood and took her hand in his and for a moment, just a moment his wife was alive again, and the two were walking into the den to spend another night before christmas as they had spent so many dancing away the evening.
They would have danced the rest of their lives, but then came the surprise pregnancy and the complications. Madline survived . But her mother did not, and joe the thick-handed butcher from minnesota, was left to raise his Madeline along.
"come on poppa." she tugged on his hand." lets dance before everyone arrives." She was right. Soon the doorbell would ring and the relatives would fill the floor and the night would be past.
But, for now, it was just Poppa and Madeline.
Rebellion flew into Joe's world like a Minnesota blizzard. about the time she was old enough to drive, madeline decided she was old enough to lead her life. and that life did not include her father.
"i should have seen it coming,"joe would later say."but for the life of me i didn't." He didn't know what to do. He didn't know how to handle the pierced nose and the tight skirts. He didn't understand the late nights and the poor grades. and most of all, he didn't know when to speak and when to be quiet.
She, on the other hand, had it all figured out. She knew when to speak to her father- never. She knew when to be quiet- always. The pattern was reversed, however with the lanky, tattooed kid from down the street. He was no good and joe knew it.
And there was no way he was going to allow his daughter to spend christmas eve with that kid.
"you'll be with us tonight, young lady. you'll be at your grandma's house eating your grand's pie. You'll be with us on christmas eve."
though they were at the same table, they might as well have been on different sides of town. madeline played with her food and said nothing. Grandma tried to talk to joe, but he was in no mood to chat. Part of him was angry; part of him was heartbroken. And the rest of him would have given anything to know how to talk to this girl who once sat on his lap.
sonn the relatives arrived, bringing with them a welcome end to the awkward silence. As the room filled with noise and people, joe stayed on one side, madline sat sullenly on the other.
"put on the music, joe," reminded one of his brothers. and so he did. thinking she would be honored, he turned and walked toward his daughter. "will you dance with your poppa tonight?"
the way she huffed and turned, you'd have thought he'd insulted her.
in full view of the family, she walked out on the front door and marched down the sidewalk. leaving her father alone. Very alone.
Madeline came back that night but not for long. Joe never faulted her for leaving. After all , what's it like being the daughter of a butcher? In their last days together he tried so hard. He made her favourite dinner- she didn't want to eat. He invited her to a movie- she stayed in her room. He bought her a new dress- she didn't even say thank you. and then there was that spring day he left work early to be at the house when she arrived home from school.
would'nt you know that was the day she never came home.
a friend saw her and her boyfriend in the vincintiy of the bus station. The authorities confirmed the purchase of a ticket to chicago; where she went from there was anybody's guess.
The scrawny boy with the tattoos had a cousin. the cousin worked the night shift at a convenience store south of Houston. for a few bucks a month, he would let the runaways stay in his apartment at night, but they had to be out during the day.
which was fine with them. they had big plans. he was going to be a mechanic, and madeline just knew she could get a job at a department store. of course he knew nothing about cars, and she knew even less about getting a job- but you don't think of things like that when you're intoxicated on freedom.
After a couple of weeks, the cousin changed his mind, and the day he announced his decision, the boyfiend announced his. Madeline found herself facing the night with no place to sleep or hand to hold.
it was the first of many such nights.
a woman in the park told her about the homeless shelter near the bridge. for a couple of bucks she could get a bowl of soup and a cot. a couple of bucks was about all she had. she used her backpack as a pillow and jacket as a blanket. the room was so rowdy it was hard to sleep. madeline turned her face to the wall and for the first time in several days, thought of the whiskered face of her father as he would kiss her good night. But as her eyes began to water, she refused to cry. She pushed the memory deep inside and determined not to think about home.
She'd gone too far to go back.
The next morning the girl in the cot beside her showed her a fistful of tips she'd made from dancing on tables." this is the last night i'll have to stay her." she said. "now i can pay for my own place. they told me they are looking for another girl. you should come by." she reached into her pocket and pulled out a matchbook." here's the address."
madeline's stomach turned at the thought. all she could do was mumble, "i'll think about it."
she spent the rest of the week on the streets looking for work. at the end of the week when it was time to pay her bill at the shelter, she reached into her pocket and pulled out the matchbook. it was all she had left.
"i won't be staying her tonight," she said and walked out the door.
hunger has a way of softening convictions
if madeline knew anything, she knew how to dance. her father had taught her. now men the age of her father watched her. She didn't rationalise it-she just didn't think about it. madeline simply did her work and took their dollars.
She might have never thought about it, except for the letters. the cousin brought them. not one, or two but a box full. All addressed to her. All from her father.
"your old boyfiredn must have squealed on you. these come two or three a week," comlpained the cousin. "give him your address." oh but she couldn't do that. He might find her.
nor could she bear to open the envelopes, she knew what they said; he wanted her home. But if he knew what she was doing, he would not be writing.
it seemed less painful not to read them. So she didn't not that week, nor the next when the cousin brought more, nor the next when he came again. she kept them in the dressing room at the cludb, organized according to postmark. she ran her finger over the top of each but couldn't bring herself to open one.
most days madeline was able to numb the emotions. thoughts of home and thoughts of shame was shoved into the same part of her heart. But there were occassions when the thoughts were too strong to resist.
Like the time she saw a dress in the clothing store window. a dress the same colour as one her father had purchased for her. A dress that had been too far too plain for her. with much reluctance she had put it on and stood before the mirror. "my, you are as tall as i am." he had told her. She had stiffened at his touch.
seeing her weary face reflected in the store window, madeline realized she'd give a thousand dresses to fell his arm again. she left the store and resolved not to pass by it again.
in time the leaves fell and the air chilled. the mail came and cousin complained and the stack of letters grew. still she refused to send him an address. and she refused to read a letter.
then a few days before christmas eve another letter arrvied. same shape. same colour. but this one had no postmark. and it was not delivered by the cousin. it was sitting on her dressing room table.
"a couple of days ago a big man stopped by and asked me to give this to you." explained one of the other dancers."said you'd understand the message."
"he was here?" she asked anxiously.
the woman shrugged."supposed he had to be."
Madeline swallowed hard and look at the envelope. she open it and removed the card. "i know where you are," it read. " i know what you do. This doesn't change the way i feel. what i've said in each letter is still true."
"but i don't know what you've said," madeline declared. she pulled a letter from the top stack and read it. then a second and a third. each letter had the same sentence. each sentence asked the same question.
in a matter of moments the floor was littered with paper and her face was streaked with tears.
within a hour she was on a bus. "i just might make it in time."
she barely did.
the relatives were starting to leave. joe was helping grandma in the kitchen when his brother called from the suddenly quiet den. "joe someone is here to see you."
joe stepped out of the kitchen and stopped. in one hand the girl held a backpack. in the other she held a card. joe saw the question in her eyes.
" the anwer is 'yes,'"she said to her father."if the invitation is still good, the answer is 'yes'"
joe swallowed hard. "oh my. the invitation is good."
and so the two danced again on christmas eve.
on the floor, near the door, rested a letter with Madeline's name her father's request.
"will you come home and dance with your poppa again?"
I dunno about you, but i teared when i read this. And this is a journey i have already went thru' and it hurts as badly as it is written. But that is really what Primers is all about. We are a family of leaders that will learn what it means to be a real man and woman. Thats the basis of why this club exists, we are not here to build a cca but we are here to build lives and i know there are many teenages out there with broken lives, people who feel like the daughter and is so far away from the love of the parents.

Guys lets get serious, and i challenged you to be with us Primers as we journey thru' this passage the next 3 weeks to explain what kind of family we really are. But i also need your paticipation in this k. I hope you will write to me what you feel each week as you read this series and share with me your thoughts and your personal experience. the mails you write to me will be confidential and will not be circulated.

My email is letitbelorprimers@yahoo.com
Chat with you next week.

SGB@SP - Opening Ceremony

Opening ceremony for SGB@SP was a pleasant event. It was enjoyable and enriching. Upon reaching, I was being assigned to my seat and had a good time mixing around with other people while waiting for more participants to come. Due to some technical problem, the event is being delayed but on the same token, it gives us more time to go and mingle around. It was pleasing to see some familiar faces that I know from some previous events.

The event was indeed an eye-opener as I always thought ceremony usually has a serious kind of atmosphere. However, it all started with ice-breakers. Firstly, we play balloon names. We are supposed to write down our names and memorize their interest. Well, after good 15 minutes of penning down names and memorizing, the ice-breaker ends without me winning. However, the second game is interesting. It’s Pictionary! Volunteers are called out to get the ball rolling. The game was quite rough and you can see everybody getting excited and started shouting out their answer. Well, it’s quite devastating to see the answer is simple but we didn’t get it. However, it does reflect on SGB, it’s a simple event with simple rationale behind it. Lastly, it’s musical water. I was still wondering what that is when people beside me pass me a cup of water to pass down. With the music booming away and tempo is getting faster. The ‘fortunate’ ones got caught and received some ‘special treatment’. Haha, the ice-breaker was fun!

Then, there is a short presentation and a video that showcase information about SGB. All I can say is that the presentation enriching and video is humorous. In all, I enjoyed the event very much. Then, it is the putting up of Christmas Star; it is cool to see the Christmas tree having a star on top. The popping of the poppers and balloons just add to the explosive climax.

Times flies when you are enjoying yourself and soon it was the end of the event. Although I still hope to stay longer, my stomach prompted me to grab a bite at the delicious refreshment Primers have arranged. With great programs, excellent company and fantastic food, what more can one ask for?

Beach Day

It was Primerss Beach Day last Saturday! We meet at harbourfront mrt at 8am and set off to Sentosa at around 9am.We reached siloso beach and proceeded with some icebreaker games like H2O.

After that, we started to play a game called 'hor li si’. It means 'let u die' each group will have points in each stations they played in. In hor li si, we were supposed to finish 4 sets of challenge. First, find missing puzzles in the sand and make a poster. Second, we have to run up and down to retrieve water with sponges and squeeze it in the bottle using our kneecaps. Third, make a pyramid using a deck of cards and let it stay stable on the styrofoam board for 5secs. Lastly, bury a person in the sand.

At the end of this game, we were all wet and exhausted. Running up and down the shore can be very tiring uh. Haa.. During our lunch, we've received a letter and it says that we have to save our group leaders. They are trapped at the most southern area in s'pore. So that means we have to go Palawanbeach and save our leader! We were supposed to throw water bombs on a piece of paper until it falls off in order to save them. Quite fun. (:

We played the last game called see action, see no action. It’s like the pictionary game but this time we just have to act out without speaking. Next, we played the see no action game. Something like 1,2,3 mu tou ren. We have to freeze when the person turn and look at us.
Hilarious poses they did during the game, We had a fun time uh.

Then it's time for prize giving ceremony. Bottles of 100plus and a volleyball as prizes. Overall, we all enjoyed beach day! =D

Steamboat Feast

“Yummy yum yum” that’s what I can say about having a steamboat for my dinner. However, it wouldn’t taste as good if I am eating alone. By having it with the SP.Primers, it makes the delicious food even nicer. It’s as though you were eating with your own family members. Where by you cook not only for yourself but also cooking and sharing the food with your fellow Primers.

After rounds of cooking, chatting and eating, Aloy, Jian Ting and Derrick broke out with some games and got everyone involved. Everyone enjoyed it and laughter filled the air. It was meaningful and exciting after all. When the hour is late and everyone is tired, we all were all thinking of our warmest home.

Although we are quite disappointed of not able to have our movie marathon carried out, we are still able to bond for a simple outing like this.
The important factor of bonding doesn’t require a/an place/event; we only need to come together.

Afterglow

As a follow-up of the Cambodia Oversea Service Learning Trip, the trippers aka Singbodians were all geared up enthusiastically to share their experiences with their families, sponsors and fellow primers. After 3 weeks of preparation, it was the finally day for Afterglow.

Trippers and helpers came down after their lessons to help set-up the place and do the last touched-up. Everyone gathered at 7.30pm and prepared to welcome the guests. The guests were welcomed by the friendly receptionists where they will receive their booklets & door gift as a token of appreciation. The door gift was a DVD that includes the photos taken at Cambodia.

Then, the passionate tour guides guided the guests through the gallery to view the pictures drawn by the Cambodia kids, photos taken in Cambodia and also a set of dirty clothes that they brought back from Cambodia. Each of them drew on a mahjong paper of their reflections after they came back. At the end of the tour, guests were invited to sign on the guestbook that has a whole collection of photos.

The show started at 8pm when our Emcees, Qingyan & Jeffrey, came on stage in their kampong style costumes to greet our guests and invite Shenglong to give a speech. The 3 main highlights of the whole Afterglow were the skit, talk show and sing-a-long. The skit was started with PCK (Vimel) as the contractor of this whole project Cambodia and brought the Singbodians into the different problems that they faced during the trip.

First, it tells that the Singbodians (Shenglong, Bernard & Lixuan) were received by 2 Cambodia girls (Juli & Meijun) in their traditional handsign. They met with the problem of warm weather that Lixuan cannot stand and fainted. However, the helpful Primers bring her off the stage to rest. It was very spectacular with the effect of the fake sun, the light effect and the sound effect. It brings the real feel of the red hot sun.

The 2nd problem that they faced was injuries. It was portrayed by Sunderason and Mark on how they help each other in time when they were injured. The last problem was the fear of beetle. At this point of time, there was a GIANT beetle (Jeffrey) flying out to Weiqiang & Chunyuan. However, this guys were tough and they killed the beetle. In all, this skit was very amusing and entertaining. It did not even need to make the extra effort to bring laughers to the audiences yet the audiences can just laugh out loud.

Next up was a talk show by Bernard, Meijun. Lixuan, Mark & Chunyuan. They shared their experience in Cambodia. This talk show brought a different feel of the whole Afterglow. It was a sharing yet it was lively. There were jokes and emotions in this talk show were more interactive than any other talk show i had watched. They were all sharing from their heart without scripts or even points to hold on to.

Between these program, there was video and PowerPoint photo slides done up by Zhiyuan and Sunderason. It was a job well done. They had burned their nights just to do a good presentation on the kids and time they had in Cambodia. And in this slides, you come to realize another world out there and how wonderful it can be to serve the community.

Finally, it was the sing-a-long session led by Lixuan. The Singbodians had learnt a few songs back in Cambodiaand had brought them back to Singapore to share with the rest of their families, friends and Primers. The 2 songs were 'This is the Day' and 'Father Abraham'. They sang it with energy and joy. The whole Afterglow ended with a song 'Thank God i found you'.

Indeed, it was a tough journey if they had went through it alone. But Thank God that they had found each other in this trip.

To close, this Afterglow had really allow the Singbodians to share their experiences that they had in Cambodia with people who have not experience it and I believe they are proud of what they had done.

15 Sept '06

Rise and shine in Phnom Penh! Gathering excitedly at the lobby at 0800, we were ready to march towards our breakfast place 2 shops down. So exciting to see what was to be on my breakfast plate! Even dreaming about the food I’ve seen on pushcarts alongside the roads could really make me drool. Hee. Especially the french loaf. Haha. Settled down, took orders, as well as receiving the many peeps by the people around, here comes the food!- Soup Vermicelli with pig organs and bean sprouts, sweet tea, and mini french loaves! Whoa!

Back to the guesthouse, we took our gigantic bags down, checked out, stacked our bags back into the minibus, and boarded the bus. 0900 - Bye Phnom Penh! Not back for Singapore, but towards Kampong Cham. Enjoying the view at the window, I had a clear glimpse on the of the faces of the Cambodians from each of their looks as we passed by the city. Passing by zinc huts, push carts, bridges, “shopping centers”, markets, barreled petrol-top up points and temples as we approached for Spider Town for lunch! I was looking forward to lunch, but “Spider Town” seems to have diffused my hopes. 1130 - Spiders anyone? Yup, 8-legged freaks to be served! GOSH! Can’t believe I’m doing this. Personally, I do hate spiders; even touching it would give me cold feet. Eating it? Never thought of it. But to eat with this bunch of primers beside me made me feel assuring. Many of us was overcoming our fear, planning and thinking which part to go for, while Danny is busy tearing the black, fried 8 legged spider apart, distributing amongst the team. YUCKS! Culture shock for many, and some went into the rejection stage! Goodness! Diverting our mindset away towards for the experience, many of us summoned the courage to hold the spidery parts. Staying side by side with each other around the oblong shaped table, on three, 1, 2, and 3! In it goes, chewing on the lower segment of the spider, it tastes like... BEEF! Huh? Just a little crunchier, that’s all! In goes the whole spider, as several of us attempted the second try. Happily snapping photos, we captured the memorable events. Lunch was then served. Filling our stomachs with spiders, rice and fish and real beef, we continued our journey. YISH (WQ’s fav word)!

Passing the endless greens, we then came to a stop to purchase bottles of distilled water. 22.5 L per bottle, the officers bought close to 20. Packed like sardines, we moved on our journey, coming by bumpy terrain for about 2 hours. From tarred roads to muddy and uneven paths, came by properly clothed Cambodians to half-naked males, we arrived at our destination, “Hope for Orphans” at around 1700. The frolicking group of 19 was so eager to hop off the bus. We were well received by the orphans. What I saw, I couldn’t forget. As our bus made the turn into the orphanage, the orphans lined themselves orderly and neatly and clapped their hands as we entered into the compound. The lot began running behind the bus, excited for our arrival, and greeted us as each of us stepped off the bus. “Sim Rat Su”, with hands together, I had my first impression on the kids that I’m spending with for the next 6 days. Though our actual work hasn’t started, the orphanage had already moved our hearts. The orphanage who are excited for our coming a month before, had prepared a tentage, and 2 rooms for us, a male and a female room. Even the bunk beds within are layed with comfortable newly bought mats. Squeaky clean floors. We were somehow or rather speechless by the grace of the Orphanage and Pastor Im.

Despite the tents we brought, we were invited to use the rooms. A human chain was formed and the bags and bottled water began flooding in the room. After settling down for awhile, we began to decide the sleeping arrangement, and didn’t hesitate to interact with the orphans by hand signs and simple Khmer language. Though there was a language barrier, it didn’t stop us. Sheng long, Vimel, Jun Jie was playing with the kids at the doorstep, while several of us, Kenny, Bernard, Zhi Hao, Chun Yuan and I sang father Abraham to them. All tried to copy what were doing, and then YISSSH! The kids sang their Khmer version! WOW! Cultural exchange! Dinner was served, with clear smiles and warm by the cooks and volunteers. Sumptuous and yummy, so like mum’s cooked food. At 2000, after taking our bathe in the toilets we were inside the boys room drawing up house and construction site rule and regulations. Our day activities ended with a short reflection time on what has happened throughout the day. Much to my surprise, beautiful scenes just keep flowing onto us. During that night, when the kids are asleep, so was several of us, the lights went out. Everywhere was pitch black. As I faced the sky, million and millions of stars revealed themselves, something that I’ve never seen before. I was glued by the beauty of the night sky. Simply unforgettable.

The day was so different from what I’ve thought, from the taste of the spiders, to the attitudes of the Cambodian people, especially those inside the orphanage to the beauty of the Cambodian night sky. Even just a day in the orphanage, I’m starting to feel so much gratitude for them. A third world country, but yet, what makes it beautiful here are, the People. I reluctantly close my eyes, to see a beautiful day go by, but confident of opening my eyes into one.

Day 1 – 0430hrs – Changi International Airport, Terminal 1 – The day that would impact the rest of our lives here forth started with Edwin and me rushing to the airport in my dad’s car. Expecting a battalion of BB Blue to receive us at the airport when we arrived, we eagerly scoured the area for signs of the SP Primers, and perhaps, signs of life in the wee hours of the morn. There were none. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, Edwin spotted some lifeless bodies lying motionless on the plastic chairs laid out neatly in front of the Foreign Exchange counter. We made our way over, and Lo & Behold! They were alive! Hahaha. We were then informed that the rest of the Primers were out scavenging the airport for food. Knowing that there would be not much to eat during the early morn, Edwin and I had already eaten before coming to the airport. We just grinned at each other. Fast forward to the next item on our agenda, the flight! It being the first flight Edwin and I had ever been on, you could predict that it was special for the both of us. Location wise it wasn’t exactly perfect, or so I thought before the trip had begun, but it would have to do. Hahaha. My first flight. Hmmm. I was exhilarated when the plane began moving. Thoughts in my mind were running at the speed of light. The plane was moving! The plane was moving! But it was moving BACKWARDS!

Hahaha. Yeah yeah, my first flight was progressing in the wrong direction, but it was absolutely necessary. The rest of the flight was quite smooth. Waiting patiently in Cambodia was another shock. There was no aerobridge to connect the terminal to the plane and we had to walk on the aero-park to the terminal building with all our baggage. My my. But did we enjoy it! We were then bundled into a mini-bus and we were all prepared to endure the rough 5 hour journey that would bring us to our destination, Kampong Cham! We were then introduced to a elderly gentleman, and his young nephew, who were to be our best friends and guides for the continuity of the entire journey, and they were Pastor Im and Mr Navy! Thank goodness we were all trained to receive change with open arms in the days training organised before the trip. Expecting to rough in out in tents under harsh weather conditions, eating food our of mess tins, the next best thing other then eating off the ground, and only having our torches to depend on for light, we were ALL shell-shocked when we were taken to a cosy hotel! Sounds too good to be true, but yes! It happened! We couldn’t believe our luck. We were then kindly briefed by Danny and Lionel that we were to be taken on a brief tour around the area to get ourselves more familiarised with Cambodian culture and their way of life before being thrown into practically the simplest ways of life in Kampong Cham. We all nodded, and followed along throughout the whole day as we were grossed out at the Tuol Sleng Museum, an ancient terror spot and tourist attraction, and were treated to first class meals for lunch and eventually dinner. Dinner was followed by phone calls home to reassure our worried parents that we had arrived safely and after a brief reflection period, we all headed to bed for an early night.

Receive TeamCambodia

It seems like just yesterday that a group of Primers went to sent off the ProjectCambodia team at Changi Airport. Today, 22nd Sep 2006 1115pm, is the day ProjectCambodia team returned back to their homeland-Singapore.

Sad to say, due to the inconvenient flight arrival time, only 4 girls, Huishan, Shihui, Jasmine and Diana, can make it to receive the team back. The girls met at 930pm to begin their long journey from Jurong to Changi Airport. Although there are only 4 of us for the long night journey, we managed to entertain ourselves in the MRT.Ha-ha. But first, we got off at Aljunied station for Diana to get the "flowery surprise" from David that we prepared for the Cambodia team. What is the surprise? It is those flowers, of orchids and jasmine combination that used to welcome important people. Thanks to David for going down to Little Indian specially to purchase it.

After that, we continued our journey. It was 1020pm when we arrived at Changi Terminal 1. We waited at Delifrance for Evelyn, baby Ne-ne, Candy, Liang Ming, Pastor Roland, Pastor Lai Fun and Terry to arrive. It was a long wait for the Cambodia team to come out of the arrival gate. Meantime, we are all well entertained by Pastor Roland's jokes.

At 1145pm, we finally catch a glimpse of Kenny and Zhi Hao waving to us. Quickly, we arrange Pastor Roland to present our surprise to the 3 officers, Danny, Kenny and Lionel while Terry and Candy were to present to the rest of the Cambodia team. The receiving team was all on stand-by.

Soon, the whole Cambodia team together with their luggage came out. Click…thank… click…oh….wonderful… click” taking photos, greeting and thank-giving are all done at the same time.
After the celebrative photos we taken, we bade goodbye and all of us took separate way home. Not much talking with them but I believe there is great story waiting to explode to us soon.

The Gift From Your All Hearts

SP Primers had proudly sent a team to Cambodia for OSLT on the 14th of September. Apart from the participants who went, there is another group of us who still like to contribute. Some contributed funds for the trip while there were 38 of us who used our hearts to prepare a gift for each of the 38 children that we have not seen yet.

I was put in charge to do the collections of these gifts. I was thankful for the RIO GLs who helped to call their members and I was so proud of my Primers that they took up the responsibility without any complaints.

The whole process was tedious as I had to meet each of them individually since we are having school holiday. That was another reason why I was proud of my Primers as they did not sound a word of grumble that they have to purposely meet me at town to pass me the gift.

Some bought notebooks, some bought pencil cases, and there were also some who bought food. There were a few who gave more than they required. Many of them also wrapped up the gifts though it was not required. They were required to write a note of blessing and attached with the gift and Qingyan & Derrick actually drew something for them instead!

In conclusion, I am seriously proud of my Primers who were so willing to give and be part of this project. Though they were not physically there, these little acts actually meant a lot not only to me but also to the participants and the children who are going to receive it. And you never know how much these little small acts can bring how big the smiles of the children.

I thank all and sincerely appreciate it all.

Sending Off TeamCambodia

Today is the eve of the sending off for project Cambodia team. We met at 8pm at Tampanies MRT station and went makan at Yoshinoya (Tampanies Mall). After our dinner, we went to catch a movie- “Little Man”. This movie is really soooo lame and funny, making us laugh non-stop. All of us really enjoyed the movie a lot…wahahah(:

After the movie, some of them went home and the rest of us continued to stay out. We walked to the MRT station but didn’t manage to catch the last train. Anyway it doesn’t matter, we came here to celebrate Diana’s birthday. We waited awhile at the station while huishan and shuxian preparing the cake. 12 O’clock…Happy Birthday to Diana!!!..we sang two different version of birthday songs, English and Chinese version..lolx.. Then, we had our group photos..say cheezz!!!

After that, we headed down to Changi Airport (viewing gallery) to ton. Wooo..can see aeroplane…and we spent our night there.

At around 4.30am, here come our project Cambodia team. They looked so fresh and “high” ar…I’m sure that they are ready..all right manz!! Then we chatted with them, the time seems to pass so fast, is time for them to leave. We gather together, pray for them and have our group photos. Although we can’t bear to leave them but we knew that they will spread their loves to the Cambodian kids there..

ALL THE VERY BEST to the team (Lionel, Kenny, Danny, Sheng Long, Vimel, Chun Yuan, Juli, Charmaine, Li Xuan, Mei Jun, Bernand, Mark, Zhi Hao, Zhi Yuan, Jeff, Sunder, Edwin, Wei Qiang and Jun Jie)…加油!!加油!!加油!!

Food Junction [PRATAMANIA]

The day had kicked off at Chinatown MRT station. Heaps of people had turned up for the happening affair. Amidst the crowd were familiar faces as well as new ones. Due to the overwhelming number of people gathering at the station, an SMRT officer came and requested us to leave the area. To avoid making a big hoo-ha out of it, all of us conceded with the request and moved to an open-spaced area near the station.

It did not dampen our spirit by abit. All participants were divided into 6 teams. A series of get-to-know sessions was then held. This was when we got to know people in the team. After some brain racking moments, we finally came up with the name “PrataMania” for our team, a fusion of local and Italian favour. “Roti Prata” was declared - almost unanimously as the favourite food among us. To enhance the uniqueness of the name, “PrataMania” was suggested and all of us agreed upon it instantaneously. Coincidentally, the word “Mania” which originated from Greece
means “madness”. Thus our team name “PrataMania” will mean “Prata Madness”. This is definitely meaningful to our group of prata lovers!

Following, a number guessing game which originates from Taiwan was played. It was aimed at fostering greater team spirit through inter-group competition. Each group had to send one representative to participate in the game. The participants were required to give a number from 1 to 99 in sequential order. If the number given was the actual number given by the game administrators, the team would lose the game. The range of numbers got narrower and narrower as the game progressed. Inevitably, one participant finally called out the “lucky” number. Initially, only the participant had to eat up the wasabi bread prepared as forefeet. However, at the last stage it involved the entire team. Two thumps up for that team!

After a short briefing session on Food Junction 2006, the event of the day finally began! Food Junction 2006 encourages creativity within the teams. Besides that, it aims at fostering greater team spirit among members of the team. The key to conquering the game was, Speed. It was basically a test of both the teams’ stamina and quick-wittedness. The game originates from a very popular TV variety show in
Taiwan known as “Shi Zi Lu Kou”. Participants would be roaming around the streets to find the dishes they need to proceed on with the game. During the game, participants would be required to complete certain tasks in order to obtain clues from the game administrators to continue with the game. At this food junction, instead of using Mandarin words to form the food chain – likened that on the show, English as well as dialects was used. For the record, our team completed the competition with 15 dishes. It took us about two hours’ time. We had roamed through a big portion of Chinatown
in search of the appropriate dishes. It was indeed a test of our stamina for all of us. Our teams’ goal wasn’t to win the competition initially, we simply did not wanted to be the last team. We wanted to avoid the dreadful forefeet prepared for the losing team. However, as the game progressed, we realised that we were one of the fastest teams. This had spurred us on to focus on winning the competition. In the end we did manage to win the competition - we came in second. Despite that we were contented and happy with it.

The first dish of the game was a hot favourite among most Singaporeans – Durian. To save time, our team decided on “Durian Ice-kacang” as our first dish, with a hawker centre in sight.

We met another competing team at the dessert stall. Perhaps like minds really do thinks alike. Following a quick snapshot of the dish by our photographer – Wang Li, our team began to gobble up the dish. In a blink of the eyes, “Durian Ice-kacang” was gone. Guava Juice was next on the list. One of our group members Jian Ting managed to finish the drink on own accord in a minute’s time. Again, snapshots were taken before and after the drink were finished.

For the next dish, we had egg tart in mind. However, we realised that it was not available at the hawker centre. So we decided to leave the centre and began the search for egg tart nearby. A cafe was spotted and egg toast was on its menu. Since egg toast starts with an “e” and ends with a”t”, which was what we needed, we decided to have egg toast instead.

The friendly lady boss agreed to help us the dish within the shortest possible time. Our photographer Wang Li began to video the process of preparing the toast as well as the friendly lady boss. As soon as the toast was ready, the team began to gorge it up. We left the café right after photos were taken. The fourth dish was a brand of sweets “Tic-tac” that was bought in a Guardian outlet opposite the café.

The fifth dish was Century Egg century as specified by the game administrators at the beginning. This marks the end of the first phrase of the competition.

We were then required to play a game with the game administrators that involve using the hands. Upon winning the game, the clue was finally revealed – it was “Haem Ji Beng”. This was to be the last dish for the second phrase.
We went to the hawker centre in sight to purchase egg tart, our sixth dish.

For the seventh dish, quite some time was spent in searching for it – tuna puff. Finally, we found it at the allocated hawker centre that has our last dish!

Then the search for our eighth dish fruit punch began. It was available in one of the drinks stall in the centre.

Following, we had “Haem Ji Beng”, the last dish of phrase 2. By the time we were done with the dish, the game administrators were nowhere in sight. We seized the opportunity to relax and bought caned drinks to quench their thirst.

Only after five minutes later did the game administrators arrive. Again, we had to accomplish a task to get the clue for Phrase three. This time, all team members were given a stick. The task is to pass the eight polo sweets given from one person to another and at the same time eat up one of the sweets. In the whole process, no one could use their hands.

After completing the task, we got to know the last dish of Phrase three – tang yuan (glutinous ball).

The dishes for the Phrase three were green tea, apple tea and tang yuan, in sequential order. Green tea and apple tea were both bought at the 7-eleven stall nearby.
Tang yuan was bought from a roadside stall along the street. The name of the stall was “Ah Bai” so the exact name of the dish was “Ah Bai Tang Yuan”.

After that, we had to complete another task to get the much needed clue. It was then that we realised that we were the leading team. The task involves the passing of a ping pong ball among the members using plastic spoons. The person that has the ball on the spoon had to walk a short distance before passing it on to the next person. Finally, we got the clue for Phrase four, the last phrase of the competition. It was herbal tea.

For the last phrase, we had nugget, teh followed by herbal tea. Substantial amount of time was spent in search for nuggets to no avail. It could not be found along the roadside stall. Perhaps this was the reason why we had lost to the first team. To avoid further wastage of time, MacDonald’s nuggets were bought despite our budget constraint.

Teh and herbal were then bought along the same stretch of shops. Upon finishing the herbal tea, all in team began to run towards the ending point.
After a very close fight between the first two leading team, the other team managed to clinched to first position. We came in second.

When all the other participating teams had arrived, the last round of testing was conducted. Each group had to send a representative to recite all the dishes that had been eaten. I was the appointed one.

Thankful, we passed the test and were spared of the ordeal. The slowest team had to drink an utterly awful combination that consists of soy sauce, curry sauce, a can of soft drink and more. Each member of that team then took a sip of the “unique” drink. Four thumbs up for that!
Lastly it was prize presentation time. The winning team or rather the fastest team won the tickets to the FINALS of Singapore Idol. However, they were not able to make it due to other commitments. Hence, the SI tickets were given to our group! We won the tickets to FINALS of SI. Hurray!

Prizes were also given to the most creative and the team that had spent the least. Following a brief photo taking session and cheers, it marks the end of Food Junction 2006.
